Project Description

SimPRENA is a 24 months project led by Munster Technological University (MTU) which aims to address a critical need within healthcare education: preparing nursing and paramedic students to navigate the challenges of a violent healthcare environment with confidence and competence. Aggression and violence towards medical staff are pressing concerns that jeopardize both patient and staff safety. By providing simulation-based training, this project seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice, empowering students and educators alike to effectively handle real-life scenarios. Most importantly, SimPRENA aims to foster a safe learning environment where students and trainers alike can develop essential clinical and decision-making skills.

The e-learning platform

The main output of SimPRENA is the project's e-learning platform, a distinctive and engaging virtual environment that we hope will enable target groups (primarily nursing and paramedic students and their educators, together with trainers and simulation experts from health organisations dealing with the safety of healthcare workers) to acquire new skills and competences for preventing and resisting violent behaviours such as physical/verbal aggressions towards medical staff in the healthcare settings.

The platform's core consists of multiple actor-led videos that highlight particular topics, behaviours, and situations. Users will be able to virtually experience a particular scene through the films, which will be further improved by extra training materials, quizzes, and comments. These are built as a web-based application delivering all the required functionalities so that it will match the needs of the users.

The platform is currently undergoing small-scale piloting to assess its feasibility and effectiveness before its official launch in Dublin and large-scale rollout.
